WE ARE ON A MISSION
Our mission is twofold.
First, we are dedicated to creating dependable, uniquely designed, Quality tools that are effective in the hands of problem solvers.
Second, we are committed to US manufacturing and aim to building in house machines, tools and processes that will allow us to supply the ever-increasing demand for high quality US made tools. As well as creating well paying, meaningful careers for hardworking Americans.
We will achieve these goals by committing to constant improvement in everything we do and make. As well as implementing creative solutions to challenging manufacturing problems and working with highly skilled individuals with relevant expertise. We believe the future of US manufacturing is bright, and will be led by small innovative companies, not multinational conglomerates and private equity.
Thank you to everyone who has helped and supported us over these past few years. You are the ones who make all of this possible.
You are supplying the fuel we need to see this mission through.
Hey I’m Jonah, owner/operator of this little knife company. My wife and I are both native Texans and we currently live in Lubbock, TX. I grew up camping, scouting and racing mountain bikes. I went to school for mechanical engineering and failed out of the engineering college. I eventually graduated with a general studies degree after 6 years of school. I really am a Dull Boy!
I’ve worked a lot of different jobs over the years, From intern at a manufacturing company to bike mechanic, I learned a lot of skills and even more about what I wanted to do in the future. Growing up I wanted to work in R&D for some cool company. I found a passion for manufacturing and business when I was in college and I am super fortunate to incorporate all of these passions into this business. This is without a doubt my dream job. I have the chance to build something that is bigger than just me, and that is a real honor. I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way, my wife, family, friends and customers, y’all have made all of this possible so thank you from the bottom of my heart.
THE DBB WAY
Simplicity and continuous improvement are two of the guiding principles of this business. You can see both through the products we make and how they have improved over the years. The same is true for the behind the scenes processes. We are building the foundation of this business in a very intentional way, so that we can grow with confidence and integrity in the years to come. Our goal is still to supply knives for everyone who wants to spend their hard-earned money on the tools we make. I understand it can be frustrating not being able to get the knife you want, just know that we are working very hard behind the scenes to solve that problem without compromising Quality while keeping production in house. But we aren’t just looking at the current ways to scale a knife company, we are stepping back and asking why. Taking the time to really think about building these manufacturing methods has given us the opportunity to try things that have never been done. This decision means a lot of hard work and problem solving, but I believe it will allow us to be more efficient and help other makers and craftsmen do the same in the long term. Sharing what we know and what we have learned, in our short time in this industry, we feel is a duty. The world is a better place when small business, with unique ideas to solve problems, have the tools to enter the market in a competitive way. America was built on business like that, we aim to continue that legacy and keep the American dream alive. At our core we are problem solvers.
IN THE BEGGINING
The year was 2019, I was in school, sharing a house with 5 other people and my friend and I decided we would try and make some knives. I had always loved knives but couldn’t afford to buy many. After binging all of Walter Sorrell’s videos we thought we knew enough to give it a shot. The first knife I made was the Cuddlefish and I made it with hand tools. Heat treated it with a propane torch and made the UGLIEST kydex sheath to ever exist. I was hooked. I acquired more tools slowly and over time made better and better knives. Me made a coal forge powered by a hair dryer in the back yard.
I made a work bench that was too tall for anyone else to use, but perfect for me. It was against a wall in a two car garage, with two cars in it.
Friends and family started asking for knives and I made an Instagram to show my work. To my surprise I gained a small following and it wasn’t long before someone I had no connection to asked to buy a knife. That man was Tony of Necromaker. Thanks Tony, you are the man! He took a shot on a totally unproven maker and that was a turning point for me. Fast forward, I graduate college, Covid happens, the job I had lined up falls through. I continue to work at the bike shop and apply to every job imaginable all while the demand for knives and my skills are increasing. Eventually after applying to HUNDREDS of jobs and not landing a single interview, I decide to take the leap and try this self employed thing. My then girlfriend and now wife was actually the one who convinced me to do it. Thanks babes! It was at that point when I started to really thing about the future if the business and formulate some plans. Some of those plans didn’t come to fruition until years later. It has been a combination of saving the cash for the next tool, learning how to use said tool then implementing that into the business. Despite being a below average student I really do love learning and the challenge of improving a process. We have come a long way from those days with the hair dryer forge in the back yard, and we still have a long ways to go. I feel like we are just getting started!
